In past posts I talked about networking to get you and your company name into the community, either by joining a BNI or Chamber of Commerce.
This post talks about making connections when you get there. Connections help people get to know you. The flip side is you get to know other people too.
Remember…
“It’s not who you know, it’s who knows you” as the saying goes.
Everything from your handshake to the way you dress to your shoes is an indicator of your self image. So always try to make a good first impression, because that is what sticks in the mind of the other person.
Go to your networking events prepared (remember the old Boy Scout Motto? “Always be prepared”). Have your 30 second personal commercial written and memorized. Then ask the person you are talking to what he or she does, engage them to talk about their business.
First try to make friends by taking a genuine interest in other people. In other words focus on connecting with them, not on your agenda to get business.
Your image will determine your ability to make connections.
Always ask yourself, “How are people referring to me behind my back”. Portray a First Class Image, and always keep the promises you make. This is a gauge that others will judge you by.
Always be yourself, talk real, act real, be real, that is the only way you will be comfortable, confident and relaxed. It creates an atmosphere for honest communication.
Everyone goes to a networking event to better themselves in some way or another. Make sure you’re prepared to help someone else get better. Get involved, become known as a person of performance, be consistent and attend meetings regularly.
Cultivate relationships even if you don’t need anything in return. People will do business with you once they get to know you. Connecting with others is the key, you need to become good at it.
I’m going to end this post with a quote from Charlie Jones, author of Life is Tremendous.
“The only difference between where you are right now, and where you’ll be next year at this same time, are the people you meet and the books you read.”
