Every now and then someone asks me a question that really makes me put my thinking cap on.
These questions tend to be off-topic questions, meaning they are not about the cleaning business.
I had one such question the other day, it was from someone who was interested in starting a construction business of some kind.
This person called me and asked me what tips I could provide about getting started in business. I assumed he was just looking for general tips, as there was nothing specific mentioned.
After making small talk about how I knew nothing about the construction business, I came up with the following 8 tips for starting a business. After penning the list I thought it may make a decent article to share with you all.
While these tips may appear like general purpose guidelines to follow when starting a business, if you take them to heart they can be extremely powerful. So with all that said, here is my advice on starting a business.
8 Tips For Starting A Business
Tip # 1 – Follow your dream.
Life is extremely short when you think about it, so you need to make the most of it. This fact alone is a great reason why you need to follow through on that dream you always had. But I’m not done, I also have another reason, one that is even more convincing.
My “senior citizen friends” say so. I base this reason on the fact that every single time I run into an older person whose best days are behind them, they tend to say the same thing. “Don’t live with any regrets”. Enough said!
Tip # 2 – Don’t let anyone rain on your parade.
Life will bring all types of people into your circle of influence. Some will cheer you on and others will try to drag you down. Learn how to tell the difference as quickly as possible and stay away from the latter.
Tip # 3 – Buy a good business book.
This is not all that hard to accomplish. Just page through as many books as possible, either online or at the bookstore, until you find one that blows your hair back, then buy it and learn from it.
Tip # 4 – Repeat step # 3.
Keep reading books from others who accomplished what you want to accomplish. This is VERY IMPORTANT. Never stop learning from both the mistakes and successes of others.
Tip # 5 – If you have not already, get your finances in order.
Success in business is tied DIRECTLY to managing your money well. All the talent in the world will not save your company from poor money habits.
Do not confuse this tip with making sure you have a lot of money. Many businesses do not require tons of money to start or operate.
You just need to have the discipline and ability to know what to spend your money on and when to do it. By following tips 3 & 4, you should be able to handle that part.
Tip # 6 – Don’t copy what others do.
While you certainly want to learn what works and what doesn’t from those who have gone before you, don’t create a Xerox copy of them.
Your goal is to be be as original and unique as possible yet still be able to operate as a business. You need to let your personality show throughout your business.
This is important because at the end of the day, the customer is buying YOU. The sooner you figure out this part, the better off you will be.
Tip # 7 – Have fun.
If it’s not fun, then you are doing something wrong and you should immediately stop what you are doing and start another company that is fun.
There is nothing worse than waking up day after day and going through the motions in a business that drains you physically and emotionally.
Tip # 8 – Give back.
Many people will never have all the options and opportunities that have been afforded you. So be sure to count your blessings and give back to the community that has given you so much.
Volunteering your time and money whenever possible to those who are less fortunate will provide you more peace of mind than anything you could purchase for yourself.
The hidden benefit of this tip is the fact that when you give back, you mingle with a group of “high quality individuals”. By spending time with this group you become known as a high quality individual yourself. This in-turn leads to even more profitable opportunities to cross your path.
These 8 steps will take you to wherever you want to go in the business world. Make the best of them starting today and you’ll reach your goals faster than you ever thought possible.
