In order for you to achieve beyond your highest expectations, you must first start with high expectations.
This just may be the biggest “little secret” out there. This is very important because your mindset goes a long way in determining whether or not success will come your way.
As Henry Ford once said, “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, either way you are right”. So work hard at only associating with positive thinkers, not with negative thinkers. Negative thinkers just talk you into a negative state of mind.
Also keep in mind that negativity doesn’t always just come from others, sometimes it comes from within. It’s easy to fall prey to your own hidden negativity by thinking you can’t do something.
Now that you know how important your mindset is to your success, lets talk some more about the traits of highly successful people. The following five traits sure seem universal in all of the successful people I know.
1 – They tend to concentrate only on the moment at hand. This means no worrying about what happened yesterday, as “yesterday” is gone.
Today is a gift to be cherished, and tomorrow is not guaranteed. So learn from the past as best as possible, learn to let go of any negative baggage THEN move on.
2 – They don’t wait on others to make things happen. YOU are the one who needs to make things happen. If you plan on waiting on others, you may be waiting for a very long time.
3 – They look at the same issue from as many perspectives as possible. This act helps you understand the problem better, helping you solve the issue faster than you would have otherwise. One of my favorite quotes is from a man named Wayne Dyer. His quote goes like this…
“When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change”.
So try to look at some of the issues you may be having in your life from a different angle. You just may be surprised that a new solution may present itself with this new way of thinking.
4 – They don’t waste time fixing what needs to be fixed. So if you are not getting results from whatever you are doing, then change things up. You don’t always have to do something the same way you always did it.
5 – They create their own personal brand. This really just means be yourself. To stand out from everyone else, your goal can’t simply be to copy others, you need to be “you”. Do this in your own style regardless of what other people think.
At the end of the day you are an individual, and you don’t have to think and act the way everyone else does or expects you to. You don’t have to follow the crowd, especially in your sales and marketing ideas, so THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX!

Tom,
I’m a big believer that outlook determines your success. It’s a good idea to be a bit realistic on one level when you start your business as far as keeping your startup costs and thus your break even point low, but on another level, it doesn’t help to have low expectations of your success. As the late Zig Ziglar once said, “Attitude, not aptitude, determines altitude.”
