I get a lot of email from folks looking to start a cleaning service, and one of the biggest fears many people have relate to the “competition”.
Their concerns usually go something like this…
“Tom, I would love to start a cleaning service but there is just so many companies to compete against“.
To the newcomer this would seem to be a big problem. But fortunately things are not always as they seem. This is because competition is good. No correct that, competition is GREAT.
Now why is that the case?
(I know you are asking that very question) The reasons are many but I’ll touch on a few real quickly. For starters, when you see a lot of companies that means THERE IS A LOT OF BUSINESS.
This of course is a very good thing! Nothing will make your wallet (or purse) bigger than a lot of demand for a service you offer. I mean that makes sense right? Being the best service in town means nothing unless there is a demand for that service!
Secondly, when you see lots of competition in your area that usually means you can VERY EASILY leap-frog over many of the lesser firms. This is because most of them are just hanging on by their fingernails (excuse the pun).
Now why would that be?
The reason is quite simple. Odds are they are only getting business because there is SO MUCH OF IT to be had, not because they are a great company. Yea I know, it’s a bit of reverse logic, but it’s true!
At the end of the day the best companies don’t get every single call from a needy customer, that’s just not how it works! This means there will be plenty of business for the other cleaning companies to pick at.
This in turn means that these “other” companies are not necessarily any good, just in the right place at the right time so to speak (ie: open and accepting customers).
What does this mean for you?
For starters just by entering the game you will be eligible to take your slice of the pie. But, and this is a big “but”, if you know how to play the game “just right” (like I teach in my courses) you can claim the lions share of that pie.
Like I said before, aside from the top one or two cleaning companies, everyone else probably stinks to a degree. The public at large is kinda stuck with them in a sense. But by just getting your business started and doing all the little things correctly, you can “blow by” the lesser companies and even challenge the big dogs (if you choose) down the road.
I know this “seems a little simplistic”, and well it just might be. But so be it! It’s as true as me sitting here writing to you. So go out there and just get started. The sooner you do the sooner you will be on your way to claiming your piece of the pie.◊
