Beginners to the cleaning business always ask me the following question: How should I handle myself when trying to sell my services?
I tell everyone the same thing. Just be YOURSELF. This comes as a shock to some because they “think” they need to be SOMEONE ELSE for some reason.
This approach just turns people off because what potential customers DESIRE more than you can imagine is someone who is AUTHENTIC. They don’t want a phony person. They don’t seek a sleazy salesperson. They don’t want a “YES MAN” either.
They CRAVE a straight shooter, someone I can trust AUTHENTIC human being. If you can be “that person”, you have an inside track to earning their business. I know that sounds so simplistic, but like I say ALL THE TIME…. “business is simple IF you keep it simple”.
Sadly, far too many people muddy the waters surrounding starting a business. They make it so much more complicated than it is. They think they need to act a “certain way” and say “certain things”. All you really have to do is just be YOU.
When meeting people for the first time don’t think about the “selling aspect” of what you are doing. Instead FOCUS on just being YOU. Think of it this way…How would you act if you were meeting a new neighbor for the first time?
You would probably SMILE, BE FRIENDLY and CHIT CHAT for a bit then go from there. If you did that it would create a POSITIVE IMPRESSION right? Well the same approach works when meeting potential clients.
So to recap, the goal for you is to CONNECT a bit with the potential customer, which like I just said only involves being YOU. After that is done your job is to SHUT UP AND LISTEN. The talking part is DONE!
The reason why I say this is because the key to learning what problems others have is accomplished by listening carefully to what they say. When you combine being AUTHENTIC with LISTENING you have the ability to close deal after deal.
So to wrap this up, don’t ever stop being WHO YOU ARE. As being that person is KEY to getting accounts. After all, you can’t be anyone else no matter how hard you try right? From there just LISTEN to what people say, as that is the key to solving their problems. If you can do that making money is easy.

interested. Regards!
Hi! I’ll give that some thought and get back to you. Thanks for stopping in!
Your site is great! I’ve been house cleaning for 13 years and have the skills to do the job really well but lacked the business knowledge to act confidently when giving a bid for service. I always ended up under bidding the job and then be mad at myself for having to work so hard. I have gained so much reading your site! The flyers are perfect and you write about various subjects like a mentor. I can’t wait to get started using all your tips. Thanks so much, Tom!
Hi Candy! Well I’m very happy to be of service (and I’m glad you found us). Touch base if you need me.
