We all have that “reason” for wanting to start a business. For some it may be easy to pin-point while for others it could be buried somewhere deep down inside them.
For me it was really all about freedom. I wanted to be able to dictate my life, my schedule and everything else in-between. I didn’t want to have to ask permission to go do something.
On a secondary level I also wanted to know if I had what it took inside me. Lastly, though I’m not terribly motivated by money, I knew my own business was a better path to financial freedom than having a job was.
Like I just said, money isn’t all that important to me, the only reason why I seek it is because you need money to get the freedom. It’s a catch-22. Anyway, this is why I started my business.
I bring all this up because I just stumbled across a survey of the reasons why people want to start their own business. My reasons didn’t really fit into the most common reasons folks start a business. But I would guess there are really a million reasons why. And this survey just highlighted the main responses. Anyway, here is what I found.
What motivated people to start a business
- 29% Ready to be their own boss
- 17% Dissatisfied with corporate USA
- 16% Wanted to pursue my passion
- 12% Opportunity presented itself
- 9% Inspiration for new business
- 7% Not ready to retire
- 7% Laid off / Job resourced
I’m curious, are your reasons similar to those above? Or do you have one more like mine, where it doesn’t quite fit into the main categories? It can be interesting to ask yourself questions like this from time to time. It can also help you re-connect with the passion that drove you in the first place!
