Having worked in the trenches for many years in my own cleaning business, I’ve seen my fair share of nasty toilets.
I believe some of the toilets we cleaned were probably NEVER CLEANED since they were installed. But the beauty of the cleaning business is the fact you can bring the dead back to life.
This is not only true with toilets, but showers / tubs and especially refrigerators too. But back to todays topic, the dirty toilet. Generally I could tell at a glance whether or not a basic set of cleaning supplies would get the job done or would we need to break out the heavy artillery.
When the basic set of cleaners wouldn’t cut it, my favorite phrase was “we need needed to NUKE IT”. And that meant (paid link) breaking out the high acid toilet bowl cleaner. This generally comes in two choices. The low acid option, or the high acid option.
I generally only kept the high acid on the shelves in the shop to go along with the regular non-acid toilet bowl cleaners we used regularly. I did that because the low acid option didn’t seem to work all that well.
The high acid concentration generally contains 23% Hydrochloric Acid. This is some STRONG STUFF. It can create a cloud above the toilet after you pour some in, and that is NOT SOMETHING you want to breath in. So you’ll want to handle it with care.
When used properly it will clean, disinfect, and deodorize high-volume restrooms quickly. It even rids the toilet of harmful bacteria and viruses, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella choleraesuis.
I always spent time with employees explaining the proper use of this product and how to use it safely. You don’t want it on your hands or clothing. You don’t want to spill any or have it leak onto carpet or flooring surfaces. And like I mentioned earlier, don’t breath in the dust cloud that it can produce.
I didn’t have (paid link) high acid toilet bowl cleaner on every account, because only a few really needed it. but it is a good tool to have in your toolbox when you run into a job that needs the strongest stuff out there.
